Over the last several years, craft beer has taken the entire world by storm, especially here in Denver. In this week’s spotlight on Denver commercial real estate, we’d like to shine the light on Renegade Brewing, one of our favorite local breweries. Renegade creates some of the smoothest brews in town, but they are also a charitable organization that we admire here in Denver.
What is Renegade Brewing?
Founder and Owner Brian O’Connell has always been a fan of craft beer, which is why Khara O’Connell purchased a home brew set for him one Christmas. Although she thought this would be a hobby he could do in his spare time, it quickly developed into an undeniable passion. Finally, the two decided to turn their passion for craft beers into a business. After spending two years planning how to make their dream a reality, Renegade Brewing opened its doors to Denver residents in 2011 at 925 W 9th Avenue in the Arts District on Santa Fe.
Although the craft beer scene has now exploded in Denver, at the time, there were only eight breweries in the city. During their first years in business, they managed to win a number of awards including Best Neighborhood Brewery in 2012 and Best Taproom Ambiance in 2013. Some of their beers were even recognized on a national level, including the Hammer & Sickle brew, which received a bronze medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival for the Imperial Stout category.
After three years of distributing their own beers locally, Renegade Brewing decided it was time to expand. So, they signed a deal with Elite Brands of Colorado, a company that now distributes Renegade brews throughout the state.
To ramp up their distribution meant that Renegade Brewing would need to amp up their production and that meant the expansion of their manufacturing facilities. As luck would have it The Sherman Agency, Inc. was redeveloping The Yard on Santa Fe, located on the south end of the Arts District on Santa Fe, around the same time Renegade was searching for a new warehouse to expand into so a deal was struck. Renegade decided that since their original taproom was already an anchor in the ADSF neighborhood, instead of moving all operations to the new facility they would instead leave the taproom on 9thand Santa Fe and just open up the secondary production facility and call both locations home so now they occupy two Sherman Agency properties.
How do they give back?
Besides being one of the first and most popular breweries in Denver, Renegade also prides itself on being one of the most charitable. The founders of Renegade recognized how fortunate Denver residents are to have access to clean water, when so many people in the world don’t have this luxury. In fact, it is estimated that over 660 million people throughout the world do not have clean drinking water. To do their part, the founders launched Tap 4 Tap.org
, a non-profit organization that provides safe drinking water to people in need all over the world. For every gallon of Renegade beer that is purchased, Tap 4 Tap provides one day of safe drinking water to those in need. To date, the organization has provided nearly 120,000 days of safe drinking water, which is remarkable and proves why Renegade Brewing is such a valuable asset in our community.
Renegade Brewing describes their beers as “offensively delicious,” and with one sip, you’ll see why they’ve earned such a title. Stop by the Renegade Taproom
